1st ALARM - GROTON CITY FD

On November 3rd the GCFD was dispatched to Pine Island for a smoke investigation. On arrival units found heavy smoke coming from the structure. A First was transmitted bringing in PBFD, EBFD, SBFD and ems units. Sorry for the quality of the pics. They were taken with my camera phone.

THE DAY Fire Damages House In Groton

Groton - Firefighters doused flames of a minor fire at a Pine Island Road home Monday evening. Groton City Fire Chief Nick DeLia the fire started in rear section of 11 Pine Island Road, a small, older two-story clapboard home. The resident, Lynn Cadett, was not in the home at the time.
DeLia said she was not able to stay in the home Monday night due to heat, smoke and water damage.
The fire was called in to Groton fire alarm at 7:39 p.m. Poquonnock Bridge, Electric Boat and Sub Base fire departments also responded, as did Groton Ambulance and the Salvation Army firefighters sevices canteen.
DeLia said firefighters vented the roof to release smoke. He said they also opened several walls to make sure no fire extended into them. He would not speculate on the cause or origin of the flames, or the amount of damage done.

FULLY INVOLVED - WATERFORD

THE DAY:

Police and local and state fire marshals are investigating two fires - one in Waterford and the other in Niantic - that occurred within an hour of each other at properties owned and managed by the same person.
No one was reported injured in either fire.
At about 1:20 a.m. firefighters responded to 53 Crescent Ave., where heavy fire was coming from the first-floor exterior, said Niantic Fire Chief Ron Pringle.
About an hour later, Waterford firefighters responded to a fire at 1 First St. , next to The Dock Restaurant and Capt. John’s Sport Fishing Center .
Property records show that Lisa Wildrick owns the Crescent Avenue property and is executor of the estate of Shirley Parker, which owns the Waterford building. Parker died in 2002.
Pringle said the Niantic fire made its way to the first floor and traveled up to the attic and through the roof.
Much of the house appeared gutted this morning, with a large, gaping hole in the roof. A portion of Crescent Avenue was blocked off.
East Lyme Fire Marshal Rich ard Morris said seven tenants lived in the three apartments in the two-story Victorian home. He said everyone got out safely.
While Morris declined to say early Thursday morning whether the fire was suspicious, he did say the state fire marshal is investigating both fires.
He said the state police Major Crime Squad, the East Lyme resident state trooper and East Lyme police were also assisting in the investigation of East Lyme ’s fire.
The American Red Cross was assisting the tenants to find lodging, he said.
Waterford officials could not be reached for comment.
The two-story house at 1 First St. is the only residential property on the small stretch of road, surrounded by restaurants and charter boats. The house is surrounded by a wooden fence, making it difficult to see the damage from the street. The top floor and the attic, however, were visible and appeared completely charred and gutted.

SBFD IN ACTION

On October 22nd the SBFD responded to Dewey Ave for a possible structure fire. SBFD found a light smoke condition in the house. A 5" supply line was deployed as a precaution.

Lowell "Buddy" Turner, Jr.

Lowell E. “Buddy” Turner Jr., age 41, of North Stonington, CT passed away Sunday, September 14th at Yale New Haven hospital. Born the son of Alice White Turner and the late Lowell E. Turner Sr. on August 31, 1967, he led a life that many admired.
Buddy grew up in North Stonington and attended Wheeler High School. He joined the North Stonington Fire Department at age 16. He quickly climbed the ranks and served as deputy chief before relocating to Mystic and joining the Old Mystic Fire Department. He served as Captain at Old Mystic and then more recently returned to his original stomping grounds of North Stonington.
Buddy was also part of the Old Mystic Fast Team, Old Mystic Dive Team, and had also been a member of Mystic River Ambulance. As an EMT, fire instructor and fire officer, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with new firefighters and helping them strive to become the best they could be. Buddy had been recognized as Firefighter of The Year more than once as was also recognized by Governor Jodi Rell with the Good Samaritan Award.
Firefighting was his passion as was helping people. Whether it be helping someone with directions, responding to an EMT call, car accident, or a blazing structure fire; Buddy thought nothing of risking his own life to save another.
Buddy was co-founder of the “Be a Buddy” Fund which was established by select firemen to raise money to help their fellow brothers and sisters of the department when they experience difficult times.
An avid sports lover, Buddy enjoyed NASCAR (Earnhardt all the way!), the Red Sox, the Boston New York Giants, fishing with his son Lowell, biking and he especially just to spend time with his two boys.
Strong willed and strongly opinionated, Buddy was a hard worker. He took much pride and found much joy in doing whatever he could to take care of his family. Buddy was a take control tough guy. He never backed down from a challenge. He had a great sense of humor with the ability to make people laugh. He had a vibrant smile like no other.
Buddy was predeceased by his father, Lowell E. Turner Sr. He is survived by the love of his life, Stephanie Gray Turner and their son Jacob.; son Lowell E. Turner III of Ashaway, RI; his mother, Alice White Turner of Stonington, sister Lisa Turner of Gales Ferry; niece Ashley Meardy of Stonington; two stepchildren, Cody Santos and Ashlee Hoitt both of Pawcatuck; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and the best friend he could have had, his German Sheppard, “Lady”. He also leaves behind many wonderful and supportive brothers and sisters of the fire department.
As Buddy said, “There is a lot to think about but nothing to worry about. Everything works out the way it should in the end”. He had battled cancer since 2003, and fought hard and stayed strong until he could no more. He passed very peacefully with his wife and mother at his side.
His family would like to thank all of the staff at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital for the wonderful care he received during his long battle. The overwhelming love an support from his brother and sister firefighters and his friends will never be forgotten and is so deeply appreciated. He was a one of a kind guy and will be in our hearts forever.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted at the Old Mystic Baptist Church, Shewville Rd, Old Mystic on Thursday at 11am. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, North Stonington.

WORKING FIRE - MOHEGAN

Take a look at the smoke twister above the chimney

On 9-03-08 the Montville Departments responded to Fitchville Rd in Mohegans district. Upon arrival units found a fully involved 2 car garage and with what appeared to be a breezeway fully involved. With help of the Mohegan Tribe units made a great stop preventing heavy fire damage to the house. 1 occupant was transported ALS for treatment.
