HAZ-MAT PICS II

Wednesday March 22nd at approimately 1000hrs the Old Mystic Fire Department was dispatched to a phoned in fire alarm activation at the MEDTRONIC MEROCEL Corp on Flanders road. Shortly after the first call another call was recieved reporting a chemical hazardous materials incident in the building with fire. The fire was knocked down by employees before evacuating the area. When the fire department units arrived, significant amounts of white smoke were found emitting from the building. The FD quickly assessed the situation and found no apparent active fire but had a smoke condition in the building. After determining that a mixture of formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide caused the reaction to occur the CERRIT team was activated. Old Mystic FD provided incident command, decontamination, and fire suppression functions. Mystic, Submarine Base, Mohegan Tribal, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal, and the City of Norwich Departments responded to the scene. CT DEP Hazardous Materials Division also responed on the initial notification of a hazardous materials incident. Initial entry was make by members of the CERRIT and the DEP in order to determine the extent of building contamination and evaluate the problem. Subsequent entries were made in order to ensure the safety of employees upon their return in to the building and also to ensure the safety of the surrounding environment.
